Marnie was on her way out of the station when Oz Pembroke stopped her. ‘New arrest, incoming. Thought you might want to take a look. Picked him up in Hackney, but his home address’s Gilborne Road. That means Erskine Tower.’

‘The charge?’

‘Possession. Bit of weed, bit of crack.’ Oz stuck his hands in his pockets. ‘Oh, and he had a blade, but that’s a given.’

‘Name?’

‘Felix Amos. We’re waiting for an appropriate adult.’

‘How old?’

Oz yawned. ‘Thirteen, pushing forty.’

Raffa’s age, and with Sam Haile’s drugs of choice on his person. Hadn’t Eric mentioned a boy called Felix who was straying from the straight and narrow in the direction of the Bellamy brothers?

Marnie removed her coat. ‘Was he dealing?’

‘He says not.’ Oz clicked his knuckles, bouncing on the soles of his shoes, two of his less noisome habits. ‘But he had it all in nifty little bags, so I’d call that a good guess.’

‘Let’s take a look.’

She went with Oz to the interview room where Felix Amos was awaiting his appropriate adult. He was a skinny kid, like so many they took off the streets, narrow shoulders under a grey Nike sweatshirt, matching jogging pants, scruffy trainers. African Caribbean, according to the paperwork. His face was pointed, with big eyes that swept the room like lasers, hair buzz-cut at the sides, dreadlocked on top. Small ears, a button nose, chapped lips. His skin was shockingly clear and smooth; Marnie knew grown women who’d kill for a complexion like his. He tucked his chin down when Oz came into the room, then shot a look past him at Marnie.

‘This your boss then?’ A child’s voice, but deep. ‘Knew you was too thick to do this on your own, Gucci.’ The bravado was well practised, his head cocking to one side, top lip lifting to show crooked white teeth. The Gucci was aimed at Oz Pembroke’s wristwatch, which Oz wore under the sleeve of his shirt and suit. Felix had a magpie’s eyes, and expensive tastes. He sat bonelessly in the plastic chair, as if it was the best seat in the house. ‘You’d better be his boss.’

‘I’m Detective Inspector Rome. Would you like a drink of water, or tea?’

‘Or squash? Or milk?’ He cocked his head further. ‘Piss off.’

‘You’ll get a crick in your neck,’ Oz warned.

‘Better than a finger up my arse.’ Felix showed him one, the middle finger. ‘Bet you love that, don’t you, Gucci? Stop and search, that’s your thing. Bend and cough. Bet your girlfriend gets it right up there when you’re screwing, the dirty cow.’

Oz clicked his knuckles. ‘Your mum and dad must be proud.’

‘My dad’s dead.’ Felix balled his fists and mimed weeping. ‘Boo-hoo. Means you’d better be careful, or my social’ll have you in court. I’m a vulnerable person, at risk.’

‘At risk of being sent down,’ Oz agreed. ‘That knife’ll get you six months for starters.’

‘DS Pembroke, could you bring us a couple of bottles of water?’

‘Yeah, Gucci, earn your keep.’ His eyes moved smoothly to Marnie as soon as Oz left the room.
